📖 “Management of Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders and Early-Stage Oral Cancer”
🔬 Based on current clinical evidence and extensive surgical experience, this lecture will review the appropriate management of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), with a particular focus on leukoplakia and erythroplakia – the two most clinically significant lesions because of their potential to progress to oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The session will also discuss major risk factors, including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and chronic mechanical irritation caused by malpositioned teeth or ill-fitting dental prostheses.
In addition, the presentation will address the clinical challenges of distinguishing OPMDs from early-stage oral cancer, emphasizing the pivotal role of early detection. When diagnosed at an early stage, treatment is typically limited to surgery alone, without the need for chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Surgical defects are generally minimal, reconstruction is rarely required, postoperative quality of life can be preserved, and survival rates exceed 95%.
